Kennel cough is a condition you should be aware of with your pets before you bring them to doggie day care or for boarding.

The cough can be spread from other animals through coughing and sneezing, or shared toys, bowls, and other objects.

What is Kennel Cough?

An infectious bronchitis causes inflammation in the respiratory system, resulting in a dry, hacking cough or like something is stuck in your pet's throat.

Multiple microorganisms, bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria, canine adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, and mycoplasma, along with many other bacteria and viruses can cause the cough, bordetella being the most common and believed to be the most contagious.

What are the Symptoms of Kennel Cough?

The main symptom is a dry, hacking cough, but your animal may be experiencing other symptoms as well.

Coughing during the night that keeps you and your dog awake, retching up white foam, lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and labored breathing can also be an indication.

What is the Treatment for Kennel Cough?

Kevin Fitzgerald, DVM, a columnist for AKC Family Dog stated “Nebulizers and vaporizers utilizing inhaled antibiotics or bronchodilators have been reported to be beneficial but are usually not prescribed”, however most cases can be treated with rest, prescribed cough medicine, and possibly antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

There is a vaccine for kennel cough caused by bordetella, but other bacteria and viruses may be the cause.

What Can You Do If Your Dog Has Kennel Cough in Griffin, GA?

Contact your vet if you notice any of the symptoms listed above. Before taking your animal to a playdate, or bringing him to be boarded, make sure to inform the facility if your animal has been exhibiting symptoms, and if you have recently gotten your pet vaccinated, make sure to let us know. Your pet must have a 10 day quarantine after vaccination before coming in.

Kennel cough can usually be treated quickly and with little after effect. Young, old, pregnant, or infirmed animals are more susceptible to catching it from other pets, and in some cases it can lead to pneumonia.

It usually lasts one to two weeks and there are even some things you can do for your pet at home to help them. A humidifier, or having them sit in the bath when you take a steamy shower are good ways to moisten the air they are breathing. Plenty of rest, keeping the kids and other animals away as they recover is also very important, and if the old remedy of honey in warm water works to soothe their throats and cough, just like it does ours.

Our goal is to keep your pets safe. Give us a call at (470) 204-7073 to schedule your pet’s next playdate and ask us if you have any questions.
